Frequently asked questions.

If you don't find the answer to your question below, please contact us and we are happy to answer any questions you may have.

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

The terms counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably. The main difference is usually the focus, depth, and duration of the work. Counselling tends to focus on specific challenges, such as relationship difficulties, grief, anxiety or other worries. It is usually shorter-term and concentrates on developing coping mechanisms to move forward. Psychotherapy generally involves deeper exploration of emotional patterns, past experiences, and underlying difficulties. It may be longer-term and is used when difficulties are more complex or persistent.

How do I know if counselling is right for me?

Counselling and psychotherapy can offer a safe and supportive space if you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, facing relationship difficulties or finding it hard to cope with life's challenges. You don't have to navigate these feelings alone.

What happens during the first session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. To gain an understanding of what has brought you to therapy, and discuss what your goals for therapy are. You may also have many questions that your therapist will endeavour to answer.

How often will we meet?

Most clients attend weekly sessions, particularly during the initial stages of therapy, to support continuity and therapeutic progress. However, sessions may also be scheduled fortnightly or adapted over time to suit each client's individual therapeutic goals, needs, and preferences.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is an important part of creating a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship. What you share in therapy is treated with care and kept private. However, confidentiality has some limits if, for example there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or a disclosure of current child abuse has been made.
